In autumn the Kiepe grows heavy: nuts, seeds, a lost button, one red leaf too beautiful to leave. But a full basket is only the middle of the story.

All autumn Rotmütz walks and gathers, the way he always has. His woven Kiepe fills with useful things and one or two things that are only beautiful, which he has decided also counts as useful.
Then the first night frost comes, and the gathering turns out to have been the easy half. The hard half is knowing what belongs to whom: which seeds the mice were counting on, which hollow the hedgehog had chosen, and what, of everything he carries, was never really his to keep.
