The Rotmütz picture books

Four seasons. One small gnome.

Eulenwald makes picture books the slow way — thick paper, sewn bindings, and a red-capped gnome who knows the forest better than anyone. Four volumes follow him around one whole year.

Draft artwork: evening at the edge of the Eulenwald — layered spruces, a pale path, and the small red-capped gnome walking home.
Draft cover artwork: four seasonal panels — blossom, meadow, falling leaves, winter moon — with one path running through them and the red-capped gnome walking it.

Rotmütz findet ein Zuhause

€18.00

Long, long ago a small gnome came walking into the Eulenwald — and looked, quietly and practically, for the one place that would hold him.

Available
Draft cover artwork: a bright summer meadow with tall grasses and small wings in the air, the red-capped gnome waist-deep at its edge.
€18.00

The forest is cool and dark and known. The meadow beyond it is bright, loud and entirely new — and something out there is calling for help.

Available
Draft cover artwork: russet autumn trees shedding leaves while the red-capped gnome walks the path with his woven basket full.
€18.00

In autumn the Kiepe grows heavy: nuts, seeds, a lost button, one red leaf too beautiful to leave. But a full basket is only the middle of the story.

Available
Draft cover artwork: a deep-green winter night with a full moon over snowy spruces and one lantern-lit window glowing beside the red-capped gnome.
€18.00

The longest night of the year is long even for a gnome. Rotmütz trims his lantern, sets out one more bowl than he needs, and listens to the snow.

Available
A small vignette of the red cap and the woven Kiepe resting against a spruce root.

Who is Rotmütz?

A small gnome, a red cap, a woven basket, and a forest that knows his quiet step — the character the whole series stands on.

Read the story

The books, plainly

Made for laps, read-alouds and repeat requests.

Every Rotmütz book is a hardcover picture book of thirty-two pages, written in short, calm sentences and drawn in the same quiet, handmade grammar. They are meant for reading aloud from about four years, and for first solo reading from about seven — though children, like gnomes, vary, and the child outranks the label.

The stories are seasonal, not serial: each stands alone, and together they walk one full year through the Eulenwald. Nothing in them hurries, and nothing is louder than it needs to be.
