Rotmütz knows every shadow of the Eulenwald, but the summer meadow at its edge is another country: taller than his head, humming with wings, hot as a stove lid. He would happily leave it alone — until a thin voice out in the grass asks for help, and help is a thing Rotmütz does not refuse.
Step by step he learns the meadow's rules the way he learns everything: by asking, by trying, by carrying the right thing in the Kiepe at the right moment. By evening he knows the way through the grass as well as the way under the trees, and the meadow knows his quiet step too.
