The longest night of the year is long even for a gnome. Rotmütz trims his lantern, sets out one more bowl than he needs, and listens to the snow.

Winter empties the Eulenwald of noise. The paths close under snow, the brook goes quiet under ice, and the night arrives in the afternoon and stays. Rotmütz does what he always does: he makes things ready. Wood by the stove, a lantern in the window, one more bowl on the table than there are gnomes in the house.
Because a light in a window is a kind of question, and on the longest night of the year, something small and cold comes to answer it.
The fourth Rotmütz book closes the circle of the year: a winter story about waiting well, and about the company that finds a door left ajar.
