It begins the way the old stories begin: long, long ago, in the owl-quiet wood, there arrived a small gnome with a red cap. He was not lost, exactly. He simply had not yet found the place that fitted him.
Rotmütz tries the hollow oak (too echoing), the brook stone (too damp) and the crow's abandoned nest (too far from the ground). Every animal he asks answers in its own way, and every answer is almost right. What finally holds him is not the grandest place but the truest one — a small door under the spruce roots, exactly his size.
A story about arriving, asking well, and knowing a home when you stand in it. The first book of the Rotmütz series, told in the plain, warm voice the series keeps throughout: simple, practical, friendly, handmade.
